Radio NISAVA, the first Roma community station in Serbia, was established in 2000, with Roma Association BAHTALO DROM as a founder. Experimental broadcasting of TV program started in April 2001. In September 2001, TV NISAVA was closed by authorities and it was the first and only electronic media closed after democratic changes in October 2000.
After three years, with enthusiastic approach and full personal commitment of all employees and with significant support from local Roma community and donor organizations, RTV NIŠAVA rapidly grown into a respectable Roma community station. At the very beginning there were two volunteers, improvised equipment in 15 square meters of working space and local coverage with 20.000 Roma as target group. Now, there are 20 employees and collaborators, over 200 square meters of working space and regional coverage with 100.000 Roma and around 1.000.000 non-Roma potential audiences.
While the majority of the radio listeners are of Roma origin, the majority of TV audiences are non-Roma people. Such situation implies different editorial approaches, so radio-program is mostly dedicated to Roma people, while TV program is more balanced and dedicated both to Roma and non-Roma population.
Editorial policy is independent of any political party but under strong influence of the Roma and non-Roma NGOs from Serbia, especially from the covered region. All their activities and campaigns are regularly presented within many radio and TV programs. In general, over 30 minutes per day are devoted to their activities.
Official influence of the Roma NGO activists reflects through their membership in Program Council and Assembly of the Association but their unofficial advices and demands are always considered very seriously too.
RTV NISAVA is planned to be the center of informing and emancipation of the Roma community in south and south-east Serbia and the most important institution for cooperation and program exchange with the Roma NGOs and Roma media from neighboring countries.
RTV NIŠAVA is member of Roma Media Network, associated member of ANEM and member of SEEMO. |
